The problem with this whole segment is that both racism and the Christian faith are so disconnected from the class relations from which they emerged. It's to the point that people like this pastor can acknowledge that race and religion have been used to forward the oppression that we see in America, and across the globe, while simultaneously disregarding the purpose for which it was done which was/is to centralize wealth and solidify class distinctions- something that he profits off of and encourages through prosperity gospel on a regular basis. You cannot believe in and encourage the unfettered acquisition of material goods while also saying that you are against racism and for actual biblical Christian values. Acts 4:32-35, John 2:13-22

Probably going to receive a lot of backlash for this lol, but referring to the part about waiters treating black vs white guests differently (just tolerating vs greeting) I don’t think is as much of a racism issue as it is a respect issue. I have worked service industry a long time, and generally black guests have been likely to not tip well or not be as understanding when small inconveniences occur throughout their service. This is true even when the servers themselves are black, serving black guests oftentimes. It’s an expectation of disrespect or thought that “this could likely be a negative interaction” that brings the difference of attitude.

I'm a white dude in Canada. Moved here from Ukraine with mom. Racism is everywhere. In Ukraine it is most definitely there, but in the relatively short time I spent growing up there, I can say that it is not as deeply seeded, culturally, emotionally, systematically as it is in "The United States". Wtf is so "United" about you!? I have to suppress that rant. Thats not the main point i'd like to share. I remember as a kid, there was a missionary of some sort that came, and was handing out bibles to kids in the area, it was almost like a little event. I randomly stumbled upon it when I was walking around. I picked one up. I've read it. And I've never read another one. That particular book as much as I can remember of it anyway, was a very nicely condensed, and presented to a child audiance, told a story. And that story had a lot of very powerful notions, morals. But it was a story. And that is how I took it. I grew up in a not very religious, but still an soviet Orthadox family. But in school in Ukraine, I've learned a lot of history. European and some Asian history. Thousands of years of history. United States on the other hand is so young, it is so immature. It gained a lot of political power, and it went around flaunting it around the world like it knows whats up. yet leaving behind a lot of damage from its intrinsically hipocritical act. Going even further back, religion, especially Christianity, from the very beginning, has been about power. Power over those who do not have it. I do not know if god exists, or doesn't, i wont go and try to convince you either way. I took the essentials from that story. I think it's about how you carry yourself, and how you act. But not how you act to appease others, or to make yourself appear like you "fit in" and to get patts on your shoulder about it while you try to live your own life and figure it all out. It has to come from self awareness, from inside. I think it's about seeing what you are doing, seeing what you are thinking, and self "policing" yourself in terms of morals. (not about the racism part, just morals in general). So the point is, I see so many people act angelic, and self ritious. And really happy about the things they say. Things that other people see them do/say in public, in their community. But then they go back home, and continue their "normal" natural ways. Essentially hiding behind the vail of "god will forgive my sins", hiding behind the religion. Completely missing the point of the passages. And others who take it to the other extremes. Drives me completely nuts. Carl, I am sorry, I do not know you, and know nothing about what you may have done for and in your community. But you do not sound genuine. You sound like you enjoy the sound of your own voice, and need that pat on your shoulder for saying the right things. Regardless, this dialog is very important and I'd love to see it happen with everybody. Every walks of life. People like Carl included. Whether he is truly an amazing human being and genuine, or not. We have to look inside ourselves and make the changes to ourselves. If we as people, religious or not religious, continue with a charade like Christianity (if you are Christian, I am not attacking you individually. you must acknowledge what has been done for thousands of years. if you've only had an opportunity to learn about the history of Columbus and United States, but nothing before that. I invite you to go and research further back) overall, and The "united" states has been doing -- we won't change a thing. This needs to happen on an individual level, genuinely. It cannot simply serve as a pat on your shoulder that you feel you need to fit in with the latest trend, and in your church on Sundays. It has to be honest, true, and genuine. It cannot be a show. Otherwise, you'll never be able to unsew the problems buried and built-in to the system, the government, policies, and the culture. Emmanuel, thank you so very much for making these videos. I really wish and hope this dialog continues everywhere.

Such a "me focused" version of church. You don't go to church to get something, going to church should be about giving God the glory he deserves and learning his word so we can live out God's will for us. "not feeling safe" because of what the pastor believes? A pastors job is to teach the Bible. What he believes should be the Bible, the Bible is sufficient. A pastor isn't supposed to be your cheerleader or therapist. He is a shepherd and a teacher.

Matthew 22:36-40 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Why does the concept of "love thy neighbor" seem to be lost among so many that claim themselves to be Christians?

This is probably the best conversation I’ve seen on race and racism. There are lots but this is pretty good. One thing that I feel that we (black people of faith) have been avoiding is that we TOO have MANY racist, prejudice and biases that we too ought to be exploring, right now. We can not cry out to the world for being racist when we ourselves are far from the example. The last thought is that we are all (black white brown yellow whatever) a people who have sin, will sin, and continue to struggle with sin of different nature. And we all, everyone of us, is a work in progress.

It should have been evangelicals and Christians that were out front and center stage in the fight against police brutality and racism, but because the church was silent, BLM stepped up to fill the void. Now the first and loudest voices to criticize BLM are evangelicals/christians. What a sad irony. God bless you pastor Carl for your courage/willingness to take a stand.

No person is black or white. Until religious leaders and everyone else accept it and represent the truth nothing will really change. The lies of race is not of GOD. The need to divide people based on skin color, especially by terms that are untrue is something people did long ago out of pure evil. Continuing such traditions is not right and it’s exactly why the same repetitive issues keep resurfacing worldwide. There are nations of people, not races of people as it is currently applied. GOD created male and female that we call human beings which should be the only term used for race. That term must be considered from a humble perspective without deeming people as gods at all. The TRUTH matters and so does what we call ourselves as a people. The noticeable differences between human beings should not be emphasized by altering the truth regarding what and who people are. There’s too many variations of skin tones to truly divide people by their true colors. Surely GOD allowed such beautiful differences for a good purpose, not so people could turn it into a lie and disguise it as good and true. The outcome of doing that is evident in all aspects of the world and there’s nothing godly about it.

There is not organizational racism in Catholic churches in America to my knowledge. Not saying there are not racist church members, but the membership (and also priests) is actually diverse (large numbers of immigrants) and all are equally accepted and differences celebrated. (In my personal opinion) My family is Catholic and I converted at 40 to protestant for my 2nd marriage. Even as a Southern woman, I was taken aback how segregated the churches are. It was something I took for granted and now miss. I really appreciate Carl's honesty and insight. I too agree God IS miraculous!

Jesus did not come to form a religion he came and preached Spirituality. Organized religion created by man has been used for thousands of years as a vehicle of divide and conquer. Those people over there are different than us so they are evil and must be converted or destroyed! Those people over there are heathens and must be enslaved or destroyed. Organized religion has been the vehicle for conquering, colonizing, stealing wealth and territories. Christians preached for slavery! Now politicians do the exact same divide and conquer tactics. Racism is perpetuated to ensure division so that the supposed elites can keep we the people fighting with each other. As opposed to standing together against them. Racism is bought and paid for we need an uncomfortable conversation about that before we the people of the world can fix the division! We are all Spiritually connected, we were all created in "GOD'S" image. Now is the time for all people to awaken from being controlled.

You being a religious man (from what I have gathered), I would like to see an episode on an uncomfortable conversation with an Atheist. If you are curious who to interview I would suggest Jim and Armin from atheistrepublic.com podcast, it would be a great crossover podcast as well. The reason I personally would like to see something like this is based on the "selling" of religion to non-religious and would give a positive perspective on religion to a staunch anti religious group. Growing up in a religious family and becoming Atheist myself I can freely see both sides of the perspective as I saw the focus on the good aspects of religion and until learning about more parts of the bible later in life really skipped over the parts many now would oppose such as Slavery and the treatment of your wife. Also in my personal experience (I am white) it has appeared to me that the majority of Black Americans are a church going group (that does not always constitute religious, but often more of a social expectation as I have also experienced being white when living in the south, it wasn't if you believed in God, it was "what church do you go to" as an expectation that you went to church).

But it is about sin though. Because if it wasn’t for sin we wouldn’t see colors, we would have walked naked like were were created, we wouldn’t see a person just as their skin color, we wouldn’t be scared of going out and being because of our skin color. It is about sin because if there weren’t sin, we would have loved anybody unconditionally. So in general, it is about sin and about skin. I think if they weren’t sin we wouldn’t see skin so we can’t separate sin with skin issues in this world.
