I have enjoyed this series of yours immensely! I have learned so much and been given the opportunity numerous times during the episodes to reflect and think about things I never have had to think about before. I am a new elementary school teacher (at an older age), and came across an article that I read for school by Ashley DiFranza www.northeastern.edu/graduate/blog/equity-in-the-classroom/ she talks about ways to have equity in the classroom. Mentioned is 'building students capacity to learn in and through discomfort' by a method called 'calling in' which is when a comments in the classroom are biased, insensitive or identity based assumptions, that 'it’s important that “rather than call people out on what they don’t know or where you disagree…[educators should, instead], call in…” and address the issue head-on so that students can “learn from and through their differences, even when [it’s] challenging.” I would be interested in seeing an educator or panel of educators on your series that talk about how to discuss comments in the classroom without being insensitive to the commenter and turning it into a real educational discussion. I believe that sometimes students do not learn about diversity/racism/equity in the home and grow up with racist or insensitive comments being made by the adults in the home. The only way they can be educated about this is in the classroom. As a teacher, I feel I am not an expert on this and would love to see this topic talked about. THANK YOU for your uncomfortable conversations!!!

The shameful history of some traditional leaders remains an awkward subject on which many politicians prefer to maintain silence. One exception was in 1998 when Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda, told an audience including Bill Clinton: "African chiefs were the ones waging war on each other and capturing their own people and selling them. If anyone should apologise it should be the African chiefs. We still have those traitors here even today." African chiefs urged to apologise for slave trade | World news ... www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjE75T9udzrAhUOWqwKHc4pAmkQFjACegQIAxAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Fworld%2F2009%2Fnov%2F18%2Fafricans-apologise-slave-trade&usg=AOvVaw2U4avJzyrZDoXZOwHeA0dA

@herbert fields I did watch it and I thank you for sharing it. I don't agree with him about everything. He talks about the police being self-sacrificing, and many of them are, but I also don't think that George Floyd needed to die. Even if he did something criminal. And 8 1/2 minutes of an asphyxiating chokehold? At some point, the arresting officer made a decision that George Floyd's life didn't matter. So to act like we should defend all life, from the moment of conception to natural death, but not see the George Floyd case as against God's will strikes me as hypocritical. Unrelated to this particular conversation, but in reference to the video you shared with me: I believe staying home from church and watching on-line services is what Jesus would do during this pandemic. The Episcopal church I work for and the Catholic church I attend have done a very good job of protecting our communities from the coronavirus, because that also is about respecting life. (And I partly just threw that in to let you know I watched the video all the way through!)

never cared: -I never cared if you were “gay” until you started shoving it in my face, and the faces of my children. -I never cared what color you were, until you started blaming my race for your problems. -I never cared about your political affiliation until you started to condemn me for mine. -I never cared where you were born until you wanted to erase my history and blame my ancestors for your current problems. -I never cared if you were well-off or poor, until you said you were discriminated against, when I was promoted because I worked harder. -I never cared if your beliefs were different from mine, until you said my beliefs were wrong. NOW I CARE! My patience and tolerance are gone. I’m not alone in feeling this way, there are millions of us who do......and we have had enough! -Anonymous copy and paste all over the internet.
